Philippines struck by two earthquakes-6.1 & 6.4 magnitudes

The Philippines was struck by two earthquakes one day apart. The first earthquake had a magnitude of 6.1 and the second had a magnitude of 6.4. At least 16 people have been reported dead in result of the quakes, according to The New York Times.

The 6.4 earthquake happened on Tuesday and was centered in Samar, a small island in the central eastern part of the country.

Samar is about 375 miles southeast of the quake in Manila, that had a magnitude of 6.1 and killed 14 people.

Rescuers in Manila were still searching for people on Tuesday who were trapped in a supermarket that collapsed in the Monday quake. At least five people died in the collapsed store, according to officials.

The Philippines sits at the intersection of multiple tectonic plates, where there is frequent earthquake activity. Officials say that the two earthquakes are unrelated.

The quakes were so powerful that towns 40 miles away from Manila were still without power a day later. Electricity providers halted energy supply to prevent fires while damage was being assessed.

About 120 families were evacuated from their homes and their towns. After the damaged is assessed and these areas are checked for saftey, families can start to return home and start to clean up the mess.
